How Positive Mental Health Quotes Can Help You to Change

Have you ever heard a positive mental health quote that really resonates with you? Have you ever seen an inspirational message that genuinely changed the way you think?

On this site, you’ll find a massive list of positive mental health quotes that will offer guidance, support, and help to those that are struggling with their mental health. We all go through tough times, and we all have moments where our emotions and our mental health prove challenging; knowing that others have been through something similar, and have helpful words of encouragement to share, can make a massive difference to the way we approach our challenges.

But more than that, positive mental health quotes can also help you to change the way you think. This is according to the latest scientific approaches to mental health.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and the Power of Thought

Were you to visit a psychologist today with a mental health issue, they would most likely use an approach called “CBT” to try and help you overcome those difficulties.

CBT stands for “cognitive behavioural therapy,” and it is the most recent evolution of the psychotherapeutic approach to mental health: even though it is no longer particularly new in itself, it has yet to be usurped.

This approach is an essential one that looks at the crucial role of our thoughts in shaping our feelings and our behaviours. In other words, while you might feel depressed or anxious and think that this is due to a chemical imbalance, it might also be due to the thoughts that led you to that point. There is a lot of debate amongst the scientific community as to whether our emotions shape our thoughts or vice versa! (The truth – as is so often the case – likely lies somewhere in the middle.)

This is why positive mental health quotes can be so useful: because they essentially allow us to reprogram our thoughts!

Mindfulness

So, how does CBT work in a therapeutic setting? Well, let’s say that you go and visit a psychologist because you have an issue with anxiety. Perhaps you find your mind is racing and full of negative thoughts that are dragging you down.

mental health quotes

For instance, you might lie in bed at night worrying that no one likes you, or you might panic about germs, or about the door being unlocked (even though you checked five times).

Perhaps you are deathly afraid of heights, and you find yourself continually worrying “what if I fall?” or even “what if I jump?”

One theory is that these thoughts arise due to your negative mental state: that an overabundance of cortisol and norepinephrine are making you see threats everywhere. This is the approach that pharmaceuticals take, in attempting to realign the chemical balance.

But the other theory is that these thoughts are what cause the changes in chemicals. And every single time you have those negative thoughts, you re-awaken the neural pathways that create them. In other words, the more you fret and worry, the easier it becomes to fret and worry more.

The solution then is to identify these thoughts and emotions and to change them into more positive thoughts.

This starts with mindfulness: being more aware of your own thoughts and the way that they arise throughout the day. Once you do this, you can identify the negative thoughts and emotions that might be causing trouble, and you can then go about fixing them.

This is a powerful strategy in itself which can make a huge change immediately. That’s because merely knowing your own thoughts will allow you to change what you focus on, and change the way you think about things. When you know the negative thoughts that are leading to your stress or depression, you can be more aware of where those feelings are coming from. Merely identifying the source of a negative emotion robs it of a lot of its power!

Cognitive Restructuring

From here, the next step is something called “cognitive restructuring.”

This is where the CBT approach will attempt to take those negative thoughts and replace them with something else entirely. But at the same time, cognitive restructuring can also be used to improve the content of your thoughts throughout the day: such that you will internalize these positive mental health quotes and turn them into a part of who you are.

Negative thoughts and beliefs come from our experiences, our education, and what we have heard from other people. Our job if we are trying to change this way of thinking is to convince ourselves that these negative beliefs are not valid or accurate.

One method is using something called thought challenging. Here, you are going to take a belief or thought that you hold, and then you are going to convince yourself that it is inaccurate by assessing it from every angle. This is often easier than it sounds because a lot of our negative and limiting beliefs actually are incorrect or irrelevant.

Let’s take the example of “what if I jump.” Of course, jumping or not jumping is entirely within your control and no one else’s. Likewise, the environment is likely very safe. Otherwise, the company that owned the space wouldn’t have passed health and safety requirements. How many previous people fell from here?

All this logic and evidence can completely undermine the argument that you might fall or jump, and that will then help you to eliminate that thought.

This is then when you can use positive mental health quotes to replace those negative feelings and emotions. That might mean reminding yourself that you are always 100% in command of your own emotions and actions with an empowering quote.

Likewise, if you find yourself worrying that people don’t like you as you are trying to fall asleep at night, then you might benefit from simply reminding yourself that most of your interactions with other people have been positive. Perhaps you’ll also tell yourself that it really doesn’t matter what other people think. And again, positive mental health quotes can help with this.

The next strategy is hypothesis testing. This means you are going to test those negative beliefs, in order to eliminate any possibility of you believing them completely.

For example, if you are someone who worries that they might stutter or freeze while giving a presentation or speech, you probably imagine how awkward it will be if people laugh at you or heckle.

The reality? Most people are kind, and most people will be forgiving of any mistakes you make. Pausing for a moment to remember what you were going to say will not be the end of the world.

So rather than worrying about what can happen and working yourself up into a panic, instead try intentionally stuttering or pausing. You can even begin your speech with a long pause before you start (which is a great way to get people to stop talking and listen).

What all this does is to show you that the worst-case scenario you feared, really isn’t that bad! Over time, you start to learn that you don’t need to worry, and this then allows you to eradicate the fear.

Internalizing Positive Mental Health Quotes

Finally, you are going to try to internalize these positive mental health quotes. You do this by merely using repetition: the more often you repeat the quote that you want to internalize, the more it will become habitual.

positive mental health quotesSo the next time you catch yourself thinking of something that makes you feel a bit stressed or anxious, just remember to use instead of the positive mental health quote that will best counteract that feeling or belief.

Likewise, you can repeat this to yourself at set times throughout the day. And one great way to make this a permanent habit is to use a habit tracking app. Failing that, you can also try using post-it notes. Place these around your home, and they will allow you to remind yourself to think these positive thoughts.

Other places to use positive mental health quotes include:

  • On your mirror: try attaching a cue card to your bathroom mirror
  • On your phone: this can be set as a reminder to appear throughout the day
  • As a wallpaper: either on your computer or on your phone
  • In your wallet: keep a small card with your favourite positive mental health quotes written on it that you will see every time you look.

All these things can work exceptionally well to internalize the best positive mental health quotes and change the way you think about yourself and about the world. Combine this with other techniques such as mindfulness, and perhaps keeping a journal of positive things people have said to you. You can also write down things that you are grateful for regularly.

All these things can make you more positive, happier, and generally a more rounded individual. That’s the power of the best mental health quotes!
